EMI Formula Explained
Your EMI is calculated using the standard reducing-balance formula used by banks worldwide:
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n − 1)
- P — loan amount (principal)
- r — monthly interest rate = annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100
- n — total number of monthly installments
Example
For a loan of 250,000 at 9.5% annual interest over 20 years: r = 0.0079167, n = 240, giving an EMI of about 2,330. Over the full tenure you would pay roughly 309,200 in interest — more than the original principal. This is why comparing tenures before borrowing matters.
Tips to Reduce Your Loan Interest
- Choose the shortest tenure you can afford. EMI will be higher, but total interest drops dramatically.
